sheesh. I did *not* need to be optimizing code written by people I've never met. (EDIT: though technically, in my mind, addressing 'out of memory' errors that crop up under normal usage isn't optimizing anymore; it's debugginging.)

Hmm, I'm having trouble with this piece of software.

Oh, the user-support mailing list won't talk to me unless I'm running a newer version of their software.

Oh, upgrading *that* software means upgrading application B, the software it talks to.

Oh, upgrading B requires upgrading C, D, E, F, and G, which B requires.

Upgrading D requires an upgrade of my operating system.

this is *stupid*.
