silk painting: dragon piece, part II

sevThe dragon piece turned out to be something of a pain.
After I painted the dragons with gutta, I then overpainted the whole thing with a vivid blue. The lovely blue/green/turquoise the background turned didn't last; once it dried, it became a more boring green...
and once I set and washed it, the whole piece ended up flat forest green with flat light-yellow dragons. :(
I put on several more layers of paint, each having a little less effect than the previous (I assume I was saturating the fibers). Thoroughly dissatisfied, I scrubbed the whole thing enthusiastically (making it even paler) and outlined the dragons carefully in gutta. I painted the inside with a collection of extra-vivid shades of orange and the outside with deep, deep blue. And then I washed it verrrrry carefully.
I don't have pictures of the result; you'll have to ask Stuart to let you take a look. The metallic orange dragons, haloed in pale yellow, on dark blue/green ground are ... interesting.
