games and nightmares
Nov. 18th, 2004 01:02 pmI transported my Sims 2 game from the computer in my bedroom to the computer in the living room; the setup in my bedroom is a terribly non-ergonomic one and I was getting a crick in my neck. The transportation process, however, isn't as smooth as I'd like...I had to package each house up separately and they lost all their relationships -- so they're not friends with each other anymore. The couple that was engaged isn't, anymore. The one who was sleeping her way through the neighborhood has forgotten the names of all her conquests and they don't recognize her at all.
It's eerily reminding me of the nightmare I periodically have that one morning I wake up and find that the last seven or ten years have been a dream -- that I'm still in my apartment in san francisco or worse, still in college. And I'm trapped in the bad old days as the full-sensory details of this golden life fade like dreams always do...

on 2004-11-18 01:45 pm (UTC)I was beta-testing some OS or another for a while during my obsession with the previous version of The Sims, so I got very used to starting over. Backup/restore of neighborhoods was hard then, too and I was wiping my hard drive every few weeks. Though I do still miss my very first household and wish I'd managed to save them. Starting over the first time was the hardest....now I've mostly convinced myself that building houses and generating sims is half the fun!
I technically still *have* the sims with relationships intact, in my computer in my bedroom...so if I don't like the way these relationships re-arrange, some day I expect somebody'll make an actual neighborhood backup tool like they eventually did for the previous version, and I'll move them off that machine. Though while I'm playing "some day", some day I'll get a new laptop with enough power to run this game, so I don't need to hijack the living room computer -- that doubles as our television -- to play it!
[ Have you done much downloading? I found a couple of really nice properties on the EA site, downloaded and installed them ... the houses show up in the menu just fine, but I'm not seeing the two commercial properties anywhere, or even a place in the menus to *find* downloaded commercial properties. ]
I packaged up and re-installed my commercial properties just like I did the houses -- they showed up along with the houses in the neighborhood-mode menu. I haven't downloaded anyone else's commercial properties yet, though.
