sheesh.

Ethan's been watching West Wing for awhile. He recently started the sixth season.

I'd been starting to get interested; it's clearly good TV. But now, not so much. Did you know that the sixth season dvds of west wing are not subtitled? Clearly they don't want the likes of *me* watching their TV show.

I've stopped paying attention because I'm annoying *myself* with all the "what did they just say?" "Wait, what was that?"

I'm not even hard-of-hearing, by anybody's measure. But fuck if I can keep track of what the hell is going on in this TV show when I miss every sixth word.

Idiots. What the hell were they thinking? What is their *problem*? They got it right the first FIVE times...

(yeah, and I'm clearly late to the party. These dvds have been out for quite awhile...)

No kidding!

I subtitle or caption everything that I can. I'm not hearing impaired either (what did you say?), but when the dialogue is so rapid-fire, I can't understand it. That's what it is. Speaking of tv shows, have you seen Weeds? Love it! Love you!

Indeed, that is bizarre. When I was watching TWW, I often had CC on just so that I could catch all the dialogue.

Have you tried turning CC on, on the TV, not the DVD? NTSC DVDs of television programs often have the CC information still in them because in NTSC, the CC information is encoded directly into the "vertical blank" lines that are not displayed. That is, the captioning data is part of the picture, not a separate file as it is with more modern DVD formats. It might still be there.

grrr... Eric's totally right.

there's no UI on the xbox (our DVD player) or the projector (our TV). But when I put one of the season 6 DVDs in the almost-never-used TV in the basement, and turn on the TV's closed captioning, lo, there's the English CC data.

I can't figure out if I'm madder at the Warner Brothers folks or the Xbox folks.

but I know folks in one of those places, so perhaps I'll start there.

seriously!

I have also been enjoying Weeds and I just got addicted to The L Word. I watch them all with subtitles, not to mention ALL my movies! What are they thinking???

I watch everything with subtitles - even when I'm not watching with the OH. I don't know how hard of hearing is defined these days but it's harder for me to pick up sounds in a generally noisy environment.
