First time flying with the baby.  Somehow, without discussion but mutually consistent, when referring to our two carry-ons the diaper bag is "mine" and the rolling suitcase is "his."  My few carry-on items are spread between the two bags -- a book here, a snack there, a pill dispenser with my critical prescriptions.   I say, on the way home, after failing to locate the book I wanted to read on the plane, that next time I'd like a carry-on of my own.  He says he doesn't know how we can make that happen, if we can only have two carry-ons for two adults.  Perhaps I will carry a large handbag, I suggest.

You don't get a carry-on and a "personal item" like a purse?

A "day pack" backpack is a personal item. I've flown with a backpack and a rollaboard.

P.S.: Complicity: yes.

Heh. I use a messenger bag for my "personal item." It's a big one: I used it to hold my calculus book, 3-ring binder, and calculator, plus a lunch, a water bottle, and a sweater when I was taking classes after work.

That's in addition to my roller bag. You can totally get away with a "large purse."

"To hit him over the head with?", my boyfriend immediately queries. Ha!

I often use a large canvas bag (like what you'd go grocery shopping with) and put my purse, knitting project, book and snack in that. I've never had a problem.

Each trip with Lila will be easier...

This was your test trip for your longer upcoming trips and you learned, so that's good. Try a day/backpack with lots of outside compartments as your personal item -- it's better than a handbag because it's "hands-free." Beyond the helpful comments, though, I understand what you are saying...I do...

I miss my sweet cuddly baby. I bend over the crib and sniff the sheets she slept on.

We just flew . . . and on top of the diaper bag (carried by Rojonoir) and personal bag (carried, optimistically, by me), we had two kid backpacks, which provided about ten minutes of entertainment. What with the cranky almost-two-year old who didn't have her own seat, neither of us had any time to read. It gets easier . . . or, um, different.

oops
