So, one of the (many) things I miss about the SF bay area are the artichokes. Not that artichokes aren't available elsewhere, of course, but only in the bay area did I get to enjoy huge, fresh, perfect artichokes for prices like 3/$1.
Up here in the slightly chillier northwest, what I get are small or medium-sized, slightly tough, often frost-spotted, but still fairly tasty artichokes for prices like $3.99 apiece.
On the other hand, since
erev_rav doesn't have quite the same obsessive relationship to this particular produce as I have, I can buy one and eat THE WHOLE THING ALL BY MYSELF!
Which, today, was totally worth the $3.99.
