It has many and varied uses. I very very rarely actually writing in my journal, but it lets me be part of communities and post there, and of course it lets my friends add me to their friend-lists, which means I can read those things they want to protect from the unwashed masses.
I'm working on a better aggregator for LJ from my "real" weblog, at which point I'll (appear to) be posting more regularly.
