Do: Pilgrims of the Flying Temple is a slapstick fantasy storytelling game. Players each control a "pilgrim" with a particular talent for getting in trouble. The pilgrims travel across a silly universe, helping people who'd been desperate enough to write to the Flying Temple to ask for help. The gameplay results in an actual written story (though rather shorn of detail, as we played it), which I've transcribed here with varying degrees of fidelity.
Cast of Characters:
The Pilgrims set out from the Temple to answer a plea for help sent by one Hazel Harrington, chief mechanic of an amusement park who's just contracted to become the universe's first "Cabbage-Friendly" park ... only to have the Coleslaw Front threaten retaliatory mayhem.
Upon arrival, Pilgrim Enthusiastic Spike finds Hazel Harrington freaking out, and speaks sharply to her to calm her down. But she was far too mean to Hazel, so Hazel locked her into the Junior Executive Bathroom (next to her boss, George, who'd already locked himself into the Executive Bathroom & refuses to come out).
Pilgrim Tender Breeze uses her fast flying skills to find the Coleslaw Front headquarters. She is trapped in an argument with a cabbage and a coleslaw front goon; she can't help them both. She is rescued by Pilgrim Dreamy Thumb, who gets one of the Talking Sky Cabbages to follow her away from the altercation. Unfortunately (as Dreamy Thumb was not paying attention to where they were going), a six-foot-tall cabbage attracts a lot of attention in Scatterbones Alley...
Meanwhile, Pilgrim Warm Python held Hazel Harrington over his head, upside-down, until she agreed to release Enthusiastic Spike from the Jr. Executive Bathroom.
Enthusiastic Spike then shouts through the locked door of the other bathroom and convinces George to explain the particulars of the contract he signed with the cabbages (and finds a clause regarding hiring security). Later, while fundraising for the "Talking Sky Cabbage Protection Fund," she finds herself trapped beneath an over-large pile of bake-sale goods which she'd stacked too high.
Pilgrim Tender Breeze uses her flying skills to return Dreamy Thumb and the cabbage to Popsicore Park. The muggers they left behind in the Alley are angry at Tender Breeze for depriving them of the six-foot-wide cabbage.
Back at the park, Pilgrim Dreamy Thumb helps Hazel test the changes made to the rides by growing vines that lift the cabbage into the ride, and her behind it. However, she does not notice the vines tangle around the modified cart of the ferris wheel, and is trapped inside with the cabbage.
Pilgrim Warm Python strangled, er, hugged, er ... Tender Breeze's captors until they agreed to not only release her, but also defend the park from a thousand thugs (with which the Coleslaw Front had threatened the park). He ends up such good friends with the muggers that they insist on dragging him along as they ride the rides.
Pilgrim Enthusiastic Spike, finding herself still underneath a mountain of baked goods while the other pilgrims engage in shenanigans, shouts so loud the cupcakes shiver to crumbs.
Moving like a blur, Pilgrim Tender Breeze performs maintenance on the Ferris wheel, freeing Dreamy Thumb and the cabbage. Tender Breeze then finds herself between Hazel Harrington, who demands she remove the cabbage from the ride, and the cabbage, who insists on staying for another go-round.
Dreamy Thumb grows beautiful flowers to distract the muggers, so Warm Python can finally get off the rides. But she was so distracted, she was captured by the Coleslaw Front with a net!
George is furious at Warm Python for bringing muggers into the park, and encouraging them in queue jumping. In response, Pilgrim Warm Python held George to his word, forcing him to accept their protective solutions, however costly.
Epilogue:
Pilgrim Enthusiastic Spike uses all the proceeds of her bake sale to pay off the thousand thugs, who admit that the baked goods would have been a sufficient bribe to keep them from assaulting the park. Pilgrim Tender Breeze eats vast quantities of free cotton candy and gets very sick. Pilgrim Dreamy Thumb wanders off from the Coleslaw Front jail, leaving a bouquet for her gracious hosts (she didn't even really notice that she'd been incarcerated). Pilgrim Warm Python founded an orphanage for lost cabbages, and found a magic broom.
Having succeeded at helping Hazel, the Pilgrims update their names to reflect their self-growth before moving on to the next letter.
Tender Breeze becomes Pilgrim Tender Gust, who helps people by something that resembles hyperactivity, only it's even faster. Enthusiastic Spike becomes Pilgrim Enthusiastic Cactus, who helps people by surviving extremes. Dreamy Thumb becomes Pilgrim Vision Thumb, who gets into trouble by focusing too hard on one thing. And Warm Python becomes Burning Python, but stays behind to run the cabbage orphanage (because his player had to go home).
(To be continued! In the next post, you'll see the story that spawned "Wrong place, wrong time, wrong floral arrangement." as well as "Only *you* can prevent florist fires.")
