And with that, they move on to the next letter: Henry Clarkson writes because his wife, Claire, has been thrown into prison for stealing from her employer. The letter is sparse with setting details, so the players do a quick scene-setting: Claire's employer is "Death By Chocolate," a candy factory, and Dulac Penitentiary is made entirely of sweets.
After arriving on the candy-making planet, Pilgrim Enthusiastic Cactus survives the extreme spiciness of the hot candy that makes up Claire's part of the prison, and delivers her a healthy snack to counteract the awful sugar high from her candy-filled diet. She brings too many apples and drops one on the warden's head, oops! Pilgrim Tender Gust steps in and explains the entire history of their pilgrimage to the warden all in one breath, leaving him dazed. Then she is paralyzed with indecision, as all the inmates clamor for her help at once.
Pilgrim Vision Thumb grows apple trees from the fallen apple, which calms & distracts the inmates (who then eat the yummy apples). Meanwhile, Henry marches up and angrily demands to know why Vision Thumb hasn't made any progress yet. (what a jerk! They've been here for what, fifteen seconds?) Enthusiastic Cactus plummets from the top of Dulac Penitentiary, rapidly manufacturing evidence that Vision Thumb has already contributed to his wife's healthy meal.
Tender Gust makes friends with all the inmates. While doing so, she finds out that Clair has been having a love affair with another inmate, Juan; Tender Gust tells Henry to give up & find someone else, but that just makes Henry harangue Tender Gust.
At Claire's request, Vision Thumb makes a bouquet of roses for Juan.
Meanwhile, Enthusiastic Cactus has been speaking with Claire's employers, Death by Chocolate, and describes Claire in such glowing terms they suddenly demand that Enthusiastic Cactus help them retrieve her from the penitentiary immediately! However, as soon as EC hears about the situation (over their magic walkie-talkies: a set of wooden cups, each containing a wind elemental) she hurriedly talks them out of it, realizing Claire is happier where she is.
Tender Gust gets Henry drunk on root beer, because it's the only way to heal a broken heart. (it's candyland. Of course you can get drunk on magic root beer.) Henry is locked in isolation to sleep it off, but he's so afraid of being alone that he requires Tender Gust to be locked in with him
Vision Thumb is so distracted, covering Dulac Penitentiary in flowers, she doesn't notice the rose-eating whale rise up out of the nearby ocean, who swallows her up with the flowers. She grows some more flowers & uses the pollen to force the whale to sneeze her out.
Enthusiastic Cactus panics Dulac Penitentiary by announcing that Claire's employers are coming to storm the prison! She then rescues herself from beneath the panicked feet of the mob by pulling herself up on Vision Thumb's nearby vines.
Tender Gust's predicament deepens as a drunk Henry gets amorous.
Vision Thumbs, focused on escaping the whale, leaves the Pilgrims' money pouch behind, along with half her seeds.
Enthusiastic Cactus survives Henry's extreme anger & halitosis and transports him into Protective Custody, thereby freeing Tender Gust. Tender Gust then convinces the inmates (and the nearby whlae) to help her find Vision Thumbs' money-and-seed pouch.
Vision Thumbs grows a fast rose bush which encloses the prison in thorns, and helps keep Claire's employers, Death by Chocolate, out. Claire's a bit upset that this makes the prison a worse place to be, and hits her on the head with a spoon. (it's not clear from the text, but this is where we win by the skin of our teeth.)
Pilgrim Enthusiastic Cactus encourages Claire to start a mail-order candied rose business. She becomes "Pilgrim Collecting Cactus," who gets into trouble via over-enthusiastic collecting.
Pilgrim Tender Gust is invited to Claire and Juan's wedding, but must decline and move on. She becomes Pilgrim Tender Tornado, helping people by doing seven things at once.
Pilgrim Vision Thumb made friends with the rose-eating whale and they exchanged scrapbooks. She becomes Pilgrim Vision Whale, helping people by imitating beautiful whale songs.
